Big Brother winner Kate Lawler, 24, developed hay fever for the first time six years ago. TV and radio presenter Kate, tells how she has had to overcome her fear of tablets to be able to enjoy summer again.

"At first I thought that I was developing a cold. I was 17 and had just started working in London in May 1997. My eyes watered all the time, I had a tickle in my throat and my nose was running. It continued for a couple of weeks and I wondered if I was allergic to the pollution. After suffering for three weeks, I went out with a couple of friends and they witnessed one of my marathon sneezing sessions. They both said: "You have hay fever." As soon as they said that, it was obvious they were right. I had the classic symptoms - the sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. I just presumed I was too old to start getting it.

I loathe taking tablets of any description, so I was not keen on taking something for my hay fever. However, I was feeling run down due to the constant sneezing and runny eyes. I decided I would have to swallow my hatred of pills if I wanted to feel like a human being again. That first year I got off quite lightly. I bought some antihistamine tablets and I'd take the occasional one to keep my symptoms in check. I also wore sunglasses to stop the pollen getting into my eyes.
However, since then it's become worse. I think I am allergic to grass as my symptoms start in May and finish in July. I also find I am worse in the mornings.

This year has been the worst yet. When it is this bad, hay fever can be exhausting and I need to be in bed by 10pm. I decided to get a nasal spray to help my runny nose and sneezing, and eye drops to help with my watering eyes. I also bought different brands of antihistamines to experiment with. Some antihistamines I tried had no effect, but one keeps my symptoms at bay. I have stopped the nasal spray as it seemed to make me worse. I wear my sunglasses all day to keep the pollen out of my eyes. Without my glasses my eyes become so inflamed they become slits and it looks as if I have a bad hangover. It is a real pain that I get this but I'm determined to enjoy the summer."
